Installing Appliances

Next, let’s discuss appliances.

In the Select Items to InstallItems area, there is a category for Appliances.

These are generic three dimensional appliances that are placed much like cabinets.

They can be resized to simulate various appliances.

They do have the advantage that the software knows they are appliances. Therefore, the clearances set in Standard Dimensions are applied when they are installed. The disadvantage is that the selection of designs is somewhat generic and limited, and you may want a more accurate representation of appliances your customer plans to use.

The software offers a way to simulate almost any appliance that is essentially rectangular.

In an earlier section we showed you how to simulate a fireplace hearth using a Display Cube.

A Display Cube can also be used to create an appliance.

Go to the web site for the appliance manufacturer and get a front view jpg image of the appliance.

Then create a Display Cube of the correct overall size and map the image to the cube.

Although the result is flat, it does a fairly good job of simulating a wide variety of appliances.

Shown here is a dishwasher, cooktop and double oven created using this technique.

As you can see, the overall effect is quite acceptable.

One trick that lets you use the standard clearances for appliances and yet install Display Cube appliances is to install one of the generic appliances of the correct size and then install the cabinets around it. The delete it and replace it with the Display Cube.
